French Village paints ‘wavy lines’ to stop cars from speeding on roads

In the UK, drivers are often frustrated by unclear road signs, but French drivers face challenges. In a town on the other side of the Channel, they have painted wavy lines at a T-junction to try to get drivers to slow down. While it seems to work, residents aren’t happy with these unconventional road signs.

A unique view awaits you in the sleepy village of Baune, near Angers, France.

The road markings look like abstract art, zigzagging across the road, making even keen drivers slam on the brakes. These lines were added due to local concerns about drivers consistently exceeding the small village’s 30 km/h (19 mph) speed limit.

The French authorities searched for ways to slow down and ultimately opted for the unusual approach of these peculiar markings.

Local mayor Audrey Reverault shared that villagers look for these markings to disrupt traffic, visually prompting drivers to slow down.

This experimental strategy is currently being tested and the authorities are observing its effectiveness.

Interestingly, the unconventional design was preferred to traditional traffic control methods, as explained by Jean-Charles Prono, mayor of the Loire-Authion region.

Jean-Charles Prono, who is responsible for seven nearby towns, explained that getting drivers to slow down at conventional traffic signals is a challenge. Instead of installing speed bumps, the city chose a unique design to prevent noise disturbance for residents. However, not everyone likes the artistic path.

One resident felt nauseated and dizzy when walking over it, while others found it unsettling and disorienting.

Residents took to Facebook to share their thoughts on the road’s design, with one suggesting it could be more dangerous.

Despite the intent to slow traffic, some believe this unconventional approach could have unintended consequences. There is a mixed reaction among the locals about this transformation of the road.
