World Food Safety Day 2023 is an ideal occasion to raise awareness and inspire action to prevent, detect and manage foodborne illness. On this special occasion, here are some healthy hygiene habits to promote food safety.
Essential Hygiene Practices for Safe and Healthy Food
1. Cleaning
Before preparing any meal, remember to thoroughly wash raw foods, such as vegetables or fruits. Also, wash your hands with warm water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food. Wash cutting boards, countertops, utensils, and other items you use to cook food. However, the Food and Drug Administration (ADA) recommends against washing meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. If water splashes out of the sink during the washing process, it can spread bacteria.

2. Separate raw foods
You should always maintain the practice of keeping raw foods separate from other foods. Remember to keep raw meat, poultry, shellfish, and eggs away from others. Use separate cutting boards and knives for raw foods.
3. Cook
Be careful when cooking food. As you cook, make sure you are aware of food temperatures and cook accordingly. Cook to safe temperatures for different foods, for example, you should cook beef, pork, fish, and lamb to 145°F, and ground beef, pork, and lamb to 160°F.

4. Cooling
There are also rules for refrigerating food. It is about keeping food at a temperature, between 0 °C and 8 °C, close to the freezing point. It is an important storage technique practiced around the world to preserve food. In accordance with the ADA, place food in the refrigerator or freezer within 2 hours of cooking or store purchase. Do this within 1 hour if it is 90 degrees or higher outside.
5. Conscious storage
It’s important to consider where you store your food to protect it from contamination and bacteria. If food is not stored properly, the bacteria it contains multiplies and becomes more dangerous to health. Colorado State University states that proper food storage helps preserve the quality and nutritional value of the food you buy, and also helps you get the most for your food dollar by preventing spoilage.
