Golaghat Sp Rajen Singh accused of abuse of power
The Golaghat SP was accused of misbehaving with a forest department official and holding him illegally after he failed to get tickets for his family’s elephant safari. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly urged civil servants to maintain their modesty in the face of intense outrage following allegations of inappropriate behavior by the superintendent of police in Golaghat. This comes after Golaghat SP Rajen Singh was accused of abuse of authority. According to reports, the Golaghat SP illegally detained Tarun Gogoi, a forest department official, till midnight as he did not have tickets for the elephant safari.
Golaghat SP Rajen Singh had reportedly ordered five tickets for his family to go on an elephant safari, but Tarun Gogoi, a forest official, could not make arrangements as all the tickets had been sold. However, the Golaghat SP reportedly called him and reprimanded him using derogatory words. Subsequently, he detained the forest officer at midnight and illegally detained him at Kohora police post for over four hours. “Spoke to Director General of Police Assam Sri @gpsinghips about the incident involving Superintendent of Police Golaghat,” the Assam Chief Minister wrote on X after the situation became public. “We oppose arrogance and public employees must maintain humility both in their attitudes and in their actions.”
“I have read it in the newspapers and we have to consider what both sides have to say about the incident,” Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh said in response to media questions about the incident. I spoke to the SP in the morning and asked him about it. He informed me that he was responsible for handling the misconduct.
