Google Meet Gets Direct Calling for Workspace Users, Redesigned Mobile App Coming Soon

Google is improving its Meet video calling platform for Workspace enterprise customers by enabling direct 1-on-1 calls between users. Previously, Workspace users could only start video meetings by generating a link and sending invitations. They can now make personal voice and video calls directly to their colleagues, similar to consumer Google Meet.

These direct calls include features like in-meeting chat, backgrounds, closed captioning, and more, depending on the Workspace edition. However, the group messaging and calling capabilities found in Meet for consumers are not available. The new direct call aims to improve collaboration and connectivity for business users.

Launch of redesigned mobile application

In addition to direct calling, Google is launching a redesigned Meet mobile app for iOS and Android. It has an updated interface with the account switcher outside the search bar and a new “Start a call” screen with contact suggestions. This is intended to simplify starting calls and meetings. Reaching all Workspace customers

Direct 1-on-1 calls will launch in the coming weeks across all levels of Workspace. It will be enabled for users who upgrade to the latest Meet mobile app with multi-colored icons. This marks continued improvements to Meet as a unified communication platform.
