Google is taking a major step forward in improving the user experience with its large language models (LLMs) by introducing a new feature for Bard, its language model.
This new update, called “Real-Time Reply,” is designed to make interactions with Bard feel faster and more dynamic. While the response speed in large language models is not instantaneous due to the complex processes involved, this update aims to make the waiting period less noticeable and more attractive.
With the “Reply in Real Time” option enabled, users will notice that Bard’s responses will begin to appear in line-by-line format as they are generated. This means that instead of waiting for the full response to be formulated and displayed, users will see the text emerge progressively. During this process, the Bard’s iconic glow will rotate in different colors, indicating that he is actively working on the message.
An interesting addition to this feature is the introduction of a “Skip Reply” button. This button, which appears in blue above the text field, allows users to interrupt Bard if they feel that the generated answer is not useful or relevant to their query. This option gives users more control over the interaction, allowing them to stop the response mid-stream and rephrase their query or try a different approach if necessary. This feature appears to be set as the new default setting for Bard, offering users a more interactive experience.
For those who prefer the original behavior, there is still an option available. The alternative setting allows users to receive responses only once they are completely complete. This method can provide faster responses than the streaming option because it eliminates the gradual display of text.
Users can easily switch between these two settings. By tapping on the settings gear icon, they will find the “Reply in real time” and “Reply once completed” options, allowing them to choose their preferred mode of interaction based on their needs and convenience.
Interestingly, this new real-time setting was released in the last few days, but it didn’t appear in Google’s Bard Updates changelog. This could indicate that Google is quietly rolling out this feature, perhaps to gauge user response and feedback before making a broader announcement.
Still, the addition of the “Reply in Real Time” feature marks an interesting development in the realm of large language models. It shows Google’s commitment to improving the user experience and pushing the boundaries of what these advanced AI systems can offer. With this update, interactions with Bard become more engaging and fluid, reducing the passive waiting period and giving users insight into the AI’s real-time thought process.
