Guns ‘n’ gums: North Carolina orthodontist offers free gun with discount Invisalign

A North Carolina orthodontist is trying to get new clients to pull the trigger on treatment by offering them a free gun.

Gladwell Orthodontics in Wake Forest sparked outrage with a two-day “Grins & Glocks” promotion that offered a gun for those who accepted treatment with Invisalign aligners.

Those who register can get a free Glock 19, which usually sells for around $500, or a silver membership to the nearby Youngsville Gun Club & Range, WRAL reported.

“It’s mind-boggling to me that an organization that I think is trying to provide health care to people in the community is associating its health care with gun deaths,” said Jennifer Copeland, executive director of the North Carolina Council of Churches. WRAL.

“They are giving away weapons that will be kept in a house somewhere, and that will potentially create violence and death with firearms,” he complained.

Align Technology, which makes Invisalign products, also didn’t smile at the promotion.

“Invisalign-trained doctors are independent practices and Align was not involved in the development or approval of this promotion by the dental practice, and only learned about it after the fact,” the statement read.

“For more than 25 years, Align has helped doctors transform smiles and change lives through beautiful, healthy smiles using Invisalign aligners, and this promotion does not reflect our brand purpose.”

However, the owner of the orthodontic company, Dr. Jason Gladwell, maintained that the promotion was entirely responsible.

“Not everyone who comes to our office will be eligible; It is not marketed to everyone. It is designed and marketed exclusively for Youngsville Gun Club and Range,” he told WRAL.

“The promotion is non-transferable. The person who actually starts Invisalign treatment has to be the eligible person,” she explained.

Prospective customers will also need to complete the necessary background checks in order to receive the Glock, added Youngsville Gun Club & Range owner Kurt Lieberman.

“It is a process. They have to come; They must have a valid driver’s license. They have to be legal citizens; They have to be 21 years old or older,” Lieberman told the outlet.

“We do a background check here on site. That has to come back approved. “They have to fill out all the paperwork.”

Neither Gladwell Orthodontics nor Youngsville Gun Club & Range immediately responded to the Post’s request for comment on the situation.

Local attorney Ron Shook also said the plan is completely legal.

“Guns are like any other property; You can buy them, sell them and dispose of them. But the distinction is that weapons are potentially dangerous in nature. So there is a regulation around the transfer of firearms,” he explained.

“The concern here is that we are not going to transfer firearms to people who do not qualify to possess them. They could be people with criminal records, mental health problems, drug and alcohol abuse problems, restraining orders against them, or in the case of a gun, those under 21 years of age,” he added about the current regulations.

Anyone interested will have to complete a background check before receiving the gun, the gun club owner said.

Notably, North Carolina law also does not require firearms training along with gun purchases, according to Everytown.

“Typically, these transactions are coordinated through a licensed firearms dealer to ensure that a background check is performed and that the recipient can legally possess a firearm,” the Bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco told WRAL. , US Firearms and Explosives about the process.

“In other cases, a gift card is given to the partner company so the recipient can work directly with the authorized dealer on the purchase.”

Gladwell said he was surprised that gun promotion garnered so much attention when its good deeds go unnoticed.

“We would love for people to be able to pay attention to some of our other campaigns and charitable donations,” he told WRAL.
