Apple’s iOS is one of the most capable mobile operating systems available today, which is an essential component of any great smartphone. iPhone users continue to find new tips, tricks, and tactics that improve the overall user experience, and this continues even after years of using the device. These methods were not only found in third-party apps but also found in system apps. The Calculator app on the iPhone is one of the most used apps on the phone; however, it is also one of the most underrated apps on the phone, as many are unaware of its full potential.
The Calculator app hides a number of useful features within its interface, making it appear to have fewer capabilities than it actually does. If you use Calculator quite often, implementing some of these tips and tricks can simplify the process of using it. Check out these tips and methods to help you get the most out of Calculator on your iPhone.
Use Siri to calculate
Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, has significantly simplified a number of time-consuming responsibilities, including but not limited to setting alarms, calls, and messages. Users are unaware that Siri also has the ability to perform calculations for them. Saying “Hey Siri” and then providing the total you want calculated is all that’s required to do this. The response Siri provides will prompt you with the solution without any action on your part.
Scientific calculator
You’ll find that the Calculator app on your iPhone can do much more than basic arithmetic like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. A scientific calculator is even included for all your nerdy calculations. You just need to flip your screen so that it is in landscape mode to access the scientific calculator. Say goodbye to Casio!

copy last result
You don’t even need to launch the Calculator app to duplicate the most recent calculation you worked on. To achieve this, open the Calculator app on your device, touch and hold the icon and an option will appear allowing you to copy the most recent result.
back option
If you’re completing lengthy calculations and accidentally enter the wrong figure, there’s no need to erase everything and start from scratch. Instead, the application will allow you to delete the characters you have entered, thus preserving the rest of the calculations. To remove typed characters, simply swipe left at the top of the screen where they are displayed.
Make your iPhone say the numbers
You can ask your iPhone to recite the number out loud if you’re curious about how it sounds when spoken. You can choose “Speak” from the Calculator app menu to hear the current number spoken as words, or you can select “Spell” to have each digit and symbol spoken in order individually. If you touch and hold the current number or double-tap it, you can hear it spoken as words. Enable the following menu items by going to Settings and selecting “Accessibility” from the list of available preferences:
Spoken content -> Speak selection (iOS 13 and later)Voice selection vs. spoken voice (iOS 12 and earlier)
It’s important to note that Apple may have changed the way the Speak Selection tool works in Calculator in iOS 16, so you may not see the “Spell” option appear in the context menu. However, you will still see the word “Talk”.
Use a lock screen shortcut to open the calculator
The Calculator widget can be accessed on your lock screen by pulling down Control Center and tapping on it. However, there is a method that is even more convenient and that is to create a shortcut directly on the lock screen. It makes even more sense to use a calculator shortcut if you’ve made it so that you can’t access Control Center from the lock screen due to security concerns.
