House lawmakers on Monday rejected an attempt to force a vote to remove Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, instead forwarding the resolution introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to the House Homeland Security Committee.
Eight Republicans joined all Democrats in the 209-201 vote to send the impeachment resolution to the House panel, which is already investigating Mayorkas for his handling of the crisis at the southern border.
“The articles of impeachment against Mayorkas have been gathering dust in the commission for months. “It’s time to move the vote to the House floor, not send it back to committee,” Greene argued in a post X moments before the vote.
Voting against the impeachment effort were Republican Reps. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), Patrick McHenry (R-Calif.), John Duarte (R-Calif.), R- California), Virginia Foxx (RN.C.), Cliff Bentz (R-Ore.) and Mike Turner (R-Ohio).

Twenty-four lawmakers (12 Democrats and 12 Republicans) did not vote on the resolution.
The House was forced to vote on Greene’s measure after she introduced it on the House floor Thursday as a “privileged resolution,” forcing leaders to act on the legislation within two legislative days. .
The Georgia Republican accused the Biden administration’s Cabinet official of “high crimes and misdemeanors” for failing to “secure the border and protect the states against the invasion” of millions of illegal immigrants.
Greene maintains that Mayorkas’ handling of the immigration crisis poses a “direct threat to national security against States and against citizens.”
“The ongoing invasion on our southern border is a direct national security threat against the States and against the citizens there,” he said on the House floor Thursday, reading the impeachment resolution.
Greene’s resolution also accuses Mayorkas of violating the rights of American citizens to protection from invasion, as stated in the Guarantee Clause of Article IV of the Constitution, and of ignoring the Secure Fence Act of 2006.
In addition, he accuses Mayorkas of having violated the Immigration and Nationality Law through the “practice[ing] capture and release policies,” terminating contracts for the construction of the border wall and destroying the Trump administration’s Remain in Mexico and Title 42 policies for the expulsion of migrants.
If the measure passed Monday, House lawmakers likely would have debated Greene’s resolution and then voted on the articles of impeachment.
