The A+ certification track is the world’s leading entry-level certification for information systems (IT) help desk and support jobs. It is the only certification track to have achieved over a million certifications and as such has launched a large number of IT careers.
Here we are looking at how to prepare for that exam. First let’s define what “practicing for a test” includes and excludes. Exam preparation isn’t exactly what we mean by “studying,” it’s what comes after you’ve studied the content that the exam sponsor (in this case, CompTIA) has published. It involves taking the content knowledge you have studied and “formatting” it for the exam. This means learning to answer very precise questions about the content you have learned and also mastering the details of the exam, i.e. time available and question types (multiple choice questions, drag and drop, performance based questions, etc.) .) . The first and most obvious way to do this is to use an A+ practice test.
How to tell a good A+ practice test from a lesser one
There are five characteristics that any relevant A+ practice exam should possess:
- Clearly Formulated Questions
- Credible detractors (incorrect answer choices)
- A unique choice for the correct answer.
- An explanation of the correct answer.
- List the precise sub-goal of the A+ exam to which the question belongs
These features are what make thorough and thoughtful preparation for the exam possible. When going through the A+ practice test, you need to analyze everything you do in terms of how you answer the questions. If you choose the correct option, you need to make sure you know exactly why you did it. By looking at detractors, you need to be able to understand not only why they are incorrect, but also why they are credible detractors within the context of the question. Finally, if you felt any doubt while answering, go to the content of the A+ exam sub-goal to which the question belongs and review that content. This is how you make sure that on the test date you can answer a similar question correctly even if it is slightly modified. This is the difference between dumb memorization (which will fail) and deep knowledge-based preparation. So far, we have exclusively looked at the multiple choice question (MCQ) type. There are other types of questions on this exam.
CompTIA A+ exam question types
In the A+ exam you will face, in addition to MCQ: drag and drop, scenario based questions and performance based questions. Of these, performance-based questions (PBQs) are the most advanced. CompTIA is able to offer these types of questions because they have outsourced exam proctoring to Pearson VUE, which has a robust software-based testing engine (you’ll take your exam on a computer). Now, for you to prepare for those types of questions, you will need to go to the next step and use an exam simulator. Although there are plenty of free A+ practice tests online, exam simulators will be a premium product that you would have to purchase. If you decide to go that route, make sure you include the performance-based question type. The best way to make sure of that is to simply google “A+ Performance Based Question” and find out who includes them and who doesn’t.
