Talking about the early life of Dr. Zafarullah Chowdhury, he was born in Uttarpara, Chittagong on December 27, 1941. He was the son of Humayun Morshad Chaudhary, the son of the revolutionary Masterda Suryasen. Masterda Suryasen led the fight against the British. Dr. Zafarullah Chowdhury reportedly completed his studies in Kolkata but studied medicine at the Dhaka Medical College. He later joined a militant group known as the Mukti Bahini and served in his village hospital treating war wounded. Dr. Zafarullah Chowdhury won the Magsaysay Award in 1984 and The Right Livelihood Award in 1992. The other renowned award he received was the highest honor in Bangladesh, Swadhinatha Patak.
