Sophie Toscan du Plantier was a French television producer who was murdered outside her farm near Toormore, Goleen, County Cork, Ireland, on the night of 23 December 1996. She was the mother of a child. Toscan du Plantier was 39 years old at the time of her death. British journalist Ian Bailey was jailed twice by the Garda Síochána, but no charges were brought, the Director of Public Prosecutions has found. There was not enough evidence to proceed to trial. Ian Bailey lost a libel case against six newspapers in 2003. Ian also lost an arrest case against Gardaí, the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General in 2015.
