ICMR confirms deadly virus in fruit
To determine the area of the state where Nipah outbreaks frequently occur, ICMR is carrying out a state-level investigation. The development came as the 42-day viral incubation period was coming to an end, with nearby Kozhikode district expected to be declared completely free of Nipah infections on Thursday. The deadly Nipah virus has been discovered by Indian Council of Medical Research scientists in the carcasses of fruit bats discovered in Kerala’s Wayanad district. The samples that the ICMR collected from Sulthan Bathery and Manathavady in the district tested positive for the virus, according to state health minister Veena George.
“It is imperative that caring healthcare providers do not take any risks when performing their routine examinations on patients. “A cautious approach is necessary,” she said in a media interview. Notably, the ICMR is carrying out a state-level investigation to identify the region of the state where recurrent Nipah outbreaks occur. The development came as the 42-day viral incubation period was coming to an end, with nearby Kozhikode district expected to be declared completely free of Nipah infections on Thursday.
The Health Minister added that while Kerala had a mortality rate of around 33.33 per cent, Nipah was thought to have a mortality rate of between 70 and 90 per cent. “It could also stop the spread of the infection. This was made possible by rapid interventions and early detection of infections. The minister announced that a research institute for Nipah would be opened at Kozhikode Medical College on Thursday. Notably, two people showing signs of Nipah in the second week of September led health officials in Kozhikode to express concern over possible spread of the virus.
