Israeli soldiers thwarted “an elaborate Hamas ambush” that used children’s dolls and backpacks equipped with speakers that made crying sounds to lure them into a terrorist tunnel in the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces said Friday.
Images released by the IDF showed the alley where the ambush would have taken place.
“Here, in every corner there were… explosives,” an IDF soldier explained in an official video.
Later, the forces found children’s dolls and backpacks with speakers to imitate crying sounds and songs, the images show.
“The goal is to entice us to search, to see these things… they play voices in Hebrew, so we will think that there are hostages and missing people here. To lure us to the area that is full of explosives,” the soldier explained as he pointed to the pile of worrying objects.
“There are ammunition and weapons here, explosives hidden in UNRWA bags,” he added, referring to the UN agency in charge of helping Palestinian refugees.

UNRWA did not immediately respond to the Post’s request for comment on the allegation that Hamas used the agency’s materials to conceal weapons.
The objects and explosives handled by the children were intentionally placed near a tunnel that connected to Hamas’ infamous underground network, according to the IDF statement.
“This network extends under other nearby civilian structures, including a school and a medical clinic.
“It also connects to a mosque containing a Hamas command center equipped with cameras that monitored IDF troops,” the military report stated.
