Indian landlord in UK faces 10-year ban for renting out ‘dangerous’ houses

In a major move that emphasizes the need to provide safe and habitable living conditions for tenants, a landlord of Indian origin has been banned from renting houses in the UK for a period of ten years.

This heavy penalty is a reaction to the landlord’s chronic lack of respect for the safety and well-being of its tenants by providing substandard and dangerous accommodation.

A council in the north of England imposed one of the UK’s toughest rental bans, of up to ten years, on an Indian-origin landlord after he regularly breached safety rules and committed major housing offences.

Nilendu Das, 55, was added to the country’s rogue landlord database after frequently renting dangerous premises in Sheffield – an entry that comes with a 10-year ban on renting or managing properties.

Photographs of the properties Das rented show roofs with holes and a property with piles of trash outside. Others display piles of trash in their backyards, dirt under their sinks, and jagged holes in their roofs.

After Sheffield City Council applied for a prohibition order, it appeared on the rogue landlords database. Das, from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was sentenced to ten years in prison on September 22 at a Manchester court.

What did Sheffield City Council reveal?

Sheffield City Council revealed this week that the ban was granted in August following a ruling at the Magistrates’ Court in Manchester and is the first it has sought as the longest banning order in the country.

“The length of Nilendu Das’ ban reflects the seriousness of his actions and his blatant disregard for fire safety and tenant safety.”

“We are delighted to see his name on the rebel landlord database,” said Councilor Douglas Johnson, chair of Sheffield City Council’s Housing Committee.

“Mr Das has a long history of managing and managing very poor quality housing and has been prosecuted by the council on numerous occasions.” This latest prosecution stems from Das’ continued involvement in the most serious housing violations.

“Their properties were among the most dangerous the council’s police staff had ever seen,” he said.

What are the consequences that Nilendu Das has to face?

The database of rogue landlords can be accessed by all local authorities in the UK and if Nilendu Das breaches the banning order he could face a prison sentence or a fine of up to £30,000. “Sheffield City Council takes strong action against bad housing and criminal activity. The council will take action to protect the people of Sheffield and drive out dishonest landlords,” Johnson continued.

It comes after Das was found guilty of endangering tenants by exposing them to inappropriate and unsafe living conditions. He was forced to pay almost £7,000 in court fees and fines for a range of housing and health and safety breaches at his Sheffield Indian restaurant.

Das was sentenced to a 12-month community order in March 2021 after being jailed for harassing tenants.
