Jetstar passenger kicked off flight for allegedly vaping in bathroom

A viral video captured the moment an unfortunate traveler was kicked off a Jetstar flight to Bali for allegedly vaping on the plane.

The clip, uploaded to TikTok by user Ali earlier this month, showed a man in a green shirt carrying a suitcase and a phone being escorted by two stern-faced police officers.

“Guys, don’t vape on airplanes,” the text of the video says.

She captioned the post: “His old friend’s sneaky vape cost him his flight.”

The ten-second clip has been viewed five million times.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 4, on flight JQ37 from Sydney to Denpasar.

The passenger was removed by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) after vaping in the bathroom and setting off smoke alarms.

“Customers cannot vape on a plane, it’s as simple as that,” a Jetstar spokesperson said.

“The use of all types of electronic cigarettes on airplanes is strictly prohibited. The vapor set off the plane’s smoke alarms before departure and our crew called the AFP to help remove the passenger. “Safety is our top priority and our crew will never tolerate this type of behavior.”

The TikTok video has attracted almost 1,700 comments.

“You mean don’t get caught vaping on a plane,” one person joked.

“Vaping in the bathroom lol,” another woman said.

“I’ve done it so many times I just need to reset it,” one man said.

But many commentators expressed disbelief at the stupidity.

“The lack of self-control is astonishing,” one wrote.

“This is such an obvious rule that it is even written all over the plane and when you buy the ticket. How do people do this now? Couldn’t you go without it? asked another.

Smoking, including vaping, is strictly prohibited on planes under Australian law and carries heavy penalties.

But the rise in popularity of vaping has led to a growing number of incidents in which passengers try their luck and often get caught.

In July, a Virgin Australia flight from Brisbane to Bali was forced to divert to Darwin after three men became drunk and unruly, with one reported vaping in his seat.

In 2021, a Perth man faced a possible $16,800 fine after allegedly smoking a vape in his seat and in the bathroom and illegally using his mobile phone as the plane approached to land.
