Joe Manchin criticizes Biden and his fellow Democrats over the border crisis

Outgoing West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin criticized President Biden and his fellow Democrats for mishandling the border crisis, saying New York City is being unfairly burdened with millions of dollars in costs to house migrants.

Manchin, who recently announced he will not seek re-election next year, told listeners of WABC 770 AM radio’s “Cat Roundtable” on Sunday that they “should be afraid of the whole border situation.”

“I tell Democrats they have to secure the border,” said Manchin, the centrist Democrat who has not ruled out an independent run for the White House.

“I tell the Republicans, yes [migrants] “If they had a worker visa permit that would allow them to work and pay their own support and basically pay taxes, that would be a benefit while we wait to adjudicate them,” he added.

“I know in New York what’s happening is you all are paying millions and millions of dollars trying to house people and keep people off the streets. It just doesn’t make any sense,” she stated.

Mayor Eric Adams projected that New York City’s bill to serve immigrants could reach $12 billion over three years.

Manchin continued: “We have Democrats and Republicans fighting over the details: ‘Oh, it’s inhumane to secure the border.’ “Well, my goodness, you can’t be the world’s superpower unless you secure the borders.”

But he also criticized Republicans for being inflexible.

“You’re not going to be able to get all those people together, but at least you can get them to sign up to work… If they’re not working, then you can go after people who came for the wrong reasons.”

Manchin said he is not excited about the 2024 White House race, telling host John Catsimatidis that Biden has been a disappointment while former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination, is dangerous.

“Biden has so far been dragged to the far left. He’s not the person we thought he was going to unite the country,” Manchin said.

Meanwhile, he said Trump has “normalized this visceral hatred. He wants to… turn it into a weapon [the presidency] for revenge. He believes that the only fair election is the one he won [in 2016].”

Manchin said Washington is politically divided and too influenced by the extreme wings of the Democratic and Republican parties, and that moderates in sync with the American middle have less influence.

“I’m not going to be able to change it from within. “I have decided to go around to see if I can mobilize the radical middle: the radical, moderate, sensible, reasonable, middle and modern part of this country,” she said.

Separately, Manchin said he strongly supports military aid to both Israel and Ukraine tied to increased funding for border security.

He said the United States could be dragged into a war if it does not support Ukraine now against Russia, noting that Ukraine’s financing costs are a “pittance” compared to Russian President Vladimir Putin winning the war. and place European allies in the North Atlantic Treaty.
