World Food Safety Day – June 7
World Food Safety Day is an annual global celebration held on June 7 to raise awareness of the importance of food safety and promote actions to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018 and is jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
1893 – Mahatma Gandhi performs the first act of civil disobedience
On June 7, 1893, Mohandas Gandhi, then a young Indian lawyer recently arrived in South Africa, was asked to change from the first-class compartment of a train even though he had a valid ticket, just because he was not white-skinned. . He refused, telling the railroad officials that if they wanted to throw him out, they could, but he would not go voluntarily. This act of standing up to injustice was, in effect, Gandhi’s first act of civil disobedience. And a lesson he would never forget.
1979 – India’s second satellite, Bhaskar I, was launched using a Soviet rocket.
India’s first experimental satellite for remote sensing of land resources/weather was launched on June 7, 1979. The main mission of the satellite was to collect data on hydrology, oceanography, forestry and telemetry. The satellite, which weighed 442 kg at launch, was launched from the Volgograd Launch Station in Russia using the Intercosmos launch vehicle, C-1 Intercosmos.
