An Indian expatriate living in the UAE, Munavar Fairoos, won the top prize of 20 million UAE dirhams in the Big Ticket Live draw on December 31.

He had a lucky start to the new year. This sum is approximately equivalent to INR 44,75,67,571 (Rs 44 crore). Thirty people who contributed to the purchase of the lottery ticket will equally share the winning prize with Munavar, a private driver from Al Ain.

When did you start buying lottery tickets?

Munavar has been a devoted customer of Big Ticket, according to Khaleej Times. For the past five years he has been buying lottery tickets every month. While talking about his future goals, Munavar admitted that he was still in disbelief after the victory. “Honestly, I didn’t expect this to happen, so I’m still not sure.”

He continued: “I still can’t believe it and will have to consider my alternatives for a while.” Apart from Munavar, ten other winners received cash prizes totaling 100,000 UAE dirhams, or around INR 22,68,607 (Rs 22 lakh), including individuals of Indian, Palestinian, Lebanese and Saudi nationalities.

How some other Indians also won lotteries in the UAE

Suthesh Kumar Kumaresan, another Indian, won the lottery on December 31 and took home one million UAE dirhams, or around INR 22,668,500. Suthesh is an engineer with Etihad Airways based in Abu Dhabi.

According to the media, the frequent buyer of lottery tickets got his winning ticket at the shop counters at Abu Dhabi International Airport. On his way back to the UAE after a family holiday, this time he bought his lucky ticket.

There are more Indians who have won big lottery prizes than Suthesh and Munavar. Nalupurackal Keezhath Shamseer, an Indian seller from Kerala, won one million UAE dirhams in the Big Ticket draw, according to a report in Gulf News on December 29. He and his two childhood friends bought the winning ticket. The profits will be shared between the three.
