White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre sparked outrage Monday after saying that three U.S. soldiers killed in a weekend drone strike in Jordan had died “fighting on behalf of the administration” and not of USA.
“Our deepest, obviously our deepest condolences, and our deepest condolences to the families who lost, uh, three, three brave, uh, three brave, uh, three brave, three people who are military, who are brave. , who are always fighting, who are fighting on behalf of, uh, this administration, the American people, obviously more, more importantly,” Jean-Pierre told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” as he struggled to form a coherent sentence.
Three Army soldiers were killed and more than 40 wounded in the early Sunday drone attack on Tower 22, a U.S. outpost along Jordan’s border with Syria.
President Biden promised Sunday that the United States will “respond” to the attack, but U.S. officials have not provided further details on what that response would look like.
Jean-Pierre was ridiculed for her comments on social media.

On Monday, the Pentagon identified the three soldiers killed in the attack as Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; Sergeant. William Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; and specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia.

The Army oath of enlistment, which every new soldier takes, promises to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will maintain true faith and loyalty to it; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers designated over me, in accordance with regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
“May God help me,” the oath concludes.
Before this weekend’s attack, there had been at least 158 attacks against US or allied personnel or equipment in the Middle East since October 17, according to the Pentagon.
