Kevin McCarthy predicts Hunter Biden will be subpoenaed at the ‘appropriate time’

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy predicted that first son Hunter Biden will eventually be subpoenaed, when the time is right.

“The one thing the American public needs to understand is that there is a strategy behind everything,” McCarthy told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

“We just follow the facts. Hunter Biden will be subpoenaed, but when will the time be right? Does he do it because television wants it or does he do it based on the facts and the moment?

Last Tuesday, McCarthy announced that he would direct three congressional committees to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Biden over his family’s lucrative overseas businesses.

The House Oversight, Judiciary and Ways and Means Committees are now leading the impeachment inquiry.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer explained last week that his panel has not yet pursued Hunter by subpoena due to the legal complexities of pursuing the first family.

“I could challenge the subpoena in court. It is very difficult. I think if it were easy to put a president or his son in front of a House committee, the January 6 committee probably would have done the same thing with Donald Trump,” Comer (R-Ky.) told Newsmax the last week.

Notably, the now-defunct January 6 Committee subpoenaed Trump to testify just before the 2022 midterm elections. It also subpoenaed people close to the Trump family such as Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancee.

“I think we should have the bank statements so we really know where the money went, so we know what questions to ask Hunter Biden,” McCarthy said. “Just subpoenaing Hunter Biden because he wants to raise money or he wants to do something, that’s not how we’re going to conduct an investigation.”

Comer’s panel has already launched a series of subpoenas and sought the voluntary cooperation of key witnesses. He’s already heard from some, like Hunter’s longtime business partner, Devon Archer.

Archer testified that President Biden occasionally participated in some of Hunter’s business calls to simply engage in quick niceties, but he emphasized that he was not far from the future president talking business.

The president and the White House have strenuously maintained that he was not involved in his son’s business affairs.

The announcement of the impeachment inquiry into McCarthy came in the shadow of a bitter cross-party skirmish over how to fund the government.

As required with each new fiscal year, which begins in early October, Congress needs to fund the government somehow or face a shutdown.

In late May, Republicans agreed to the Fiscal Responsibility Act to increase the nation’s borrowing authority as part of the uproar over the debt ceiling.

The debt ceiling simply correlates with how much the government can borrow and does not fund the government.

As part of that debt limit deal, they also agreed to increase appropriations numbers ahead of the government’s funding process.

But, as McCarthy has acknowledged, progress in advancing the 12 appropriations bills needed to fund the government has been slow. That’s why you’re looking for an interim, ongoing solution to avoid a shutdown.

Hardliners in his group have demanded further cuts below the agreed figures, as well as other concessions such as beefed up border security in exchange for a CR.

“I understand the frustration we have with this administration. But it is a difference in strategy,” McCarthy warned. “I’ve been through shutdowns and I’ve never seen anyone win a shutdown because when you shut down you give all your power to the administration.”

Complicating his efforts is the fact that he is dealing with a narrow four-seat House majority of 221 to 212, which has lost one seat now that Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah) has resigned.

If Congress does not adequately fund the government and relies on a CR by January of next year, there will be an automatic 1% spending cut, according to the Fiscal Responsibility Law.

McCarthy’s Democratic counterpart, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), described the Republican Party as embroiled in a nasty “civil war.”

“Let’s be clear, House Republicans are in the middle of a civil war,” Jeffries said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“We urge our Republican colleagues in the House to join us, stop fighting among themselves, end the reckless and reprehensible Republican civil war, and get into the business of the American people.”

The House has 13 calendar days and eight legislative days to resolve the impasse and keep the government’s lights on.
