Koena Mitra was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, to a middle-class Bengali family, on January 7, 1984. Her father, Vishwanath Mitra, is a chartered accountant and her mother, Krishna Mitra, was a school teacher. She attended South Point High School, Kolkata and completed her graduation from Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata. She is a postgraduate in psychology. After deciding that she wanted to pursue acting and modeling, she joined the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute in Los Angeles.

Career
Her first appearance on screen was in the item number Khullam Khulla of Road (2002), followed by another appearance in the item number Koduva Meesai of a Tamil film Dhool in 2003. But her fortune flipped after her other song , Saki Saki by Musafir in 2004. , this song made her an overnight star and she received the nickname The Saki Girl. Later Koena did many Bollywood movies like Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, Insan, Apna Sapna Money Money, Hey Babyy.
