‘Little bastard’ bear walks into convenience store, steals pack of gummy bears and eats them in front of owner

This thief was selective about bears.

A mischievous Canadian bear was captured on security video snooping around inside a Vancouver convenience store and sniffing around, of all things, with a package of gummy bears.

“Then this little bastard has the nerve to sit at the end of my driveway, stare at me and eat it,” Jay deGoesbriand, owner of Tiptons Gas Bar, told the Vancouver Sun.

“He just decided to go in and do some shopping…without paying!” said the store owner.

DeGoesbriand had finished sweeping the inside of the store around 6:30 a.m. Monday and was drinking his morning coffee when he saw the black bear entering the store.

He said the furry creature sniffed around a bit before making its selection and then headed out for a quick snack.

“It’s definitely a first for me,” he told the outlet. “He wasn’t aggressive at all. He didn’t knock anything down. He didn’t even look at me. “It was quite strange.”

The close encounter with bears is not entirely foreign to Lake Cowichan, where the store is located.

According to the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service, there were more than 6,000 bear complaints in August alone, almost double the 3,500 sightings in August 2022.

Bears often forage to gain weight before hibernation, although this thieving bear is unlikely to gorge itself after a measly 75-cent package of gummy bears.

Karen deGoesbriand, the merchant’s surprised wife, was delighted by the whole thing.

“He liked sweets,” she told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. “I know it is a wild animal; I just wanted to give him a hug. I just thought it was amazing.”

Meanwhile, Jay deGoesbriand said Monday morning’s robbery wasn’t the last he saw of the sticky-legged thief, who returned to his store Tuesday.

This time he kept the door closed, he said.
