‘Maid waiting areas to be used instead of parks’: Bengaluru society faces backlash over recent notice

While there has been great progress in reducing class prejudice in the modern world, it would be wrong to claim that it has been completely eradicated. Class discrimination is the unfair treatment or prejudice that people encounter because of their social or economic class.

Many countries have laws and regulations to protect people against class discrimination. Anti-discrimination legislation seeks to ensure equal opportunity in work, education, housing, and other aspects of life.

However, due to difficult socio-economic conditions and institutional disparities, numerous forms of discrimination based on class persist and this is one such example.

A sequence of orders given to maids in Bangalore has caused widespread resentment on social media. Vibin Babuurajan, a Twitter user, visited the microblogging site and posted a screenshot of a circular with some instructions.

The circular noted that people feel “uncomfortable” when surrounded by maids wherever they go. As a result, she encouraged domestic workers to spend their breaks in waiting areas. The decision was made because “security is not being able to monitor common areas.”

The tweet sparked widespread criticism on social media. He further stated that most people have avoided sitting on sofas in public spaces because chefs and maids use them. “Residents of a class-misleading, class-oriented Bangalore society,” the caption read.

Instead of meeting in parks, amphitheaters or roundabouts, management offers the use of waiting areas within various buildings as places for maids to wait or eat. The goal is to address residents’ concerns about feeling uncomfortable because cleaners are there wherever they walk, as well as the challenge of monitoring safety in open spaces.

Other vocations such as cooks, carpenters and plumbers are known to use sofas in reception construction, and it is claimed that many people have stopped using such sofas.

Many people were angered by the strange notice, one woman asked why it’s so hard for people to understand that maids are only human and also deserve the same respect.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that they are only human?

A man thought that the same maid roams your house, cooks for you, cleans for you and that is acceptable, but seeing them around you in the park is troublesome? Honestly, it sounds pathetic!

The same maid wandering around your house, cooking for you, cleaning for you is fine. But seeing them around you in the park is troublesome? Pathetic!

One user gave an example from the US of how in a cafeteria at their former company in the US they saw janitors/other support staff sit, use, respect and serve as a CEO would have been treated, but in their current company cafeteria, they see cleaners/janitors standing around and drinking tea even when seats are free. Feudal/caste backgrounds of our society.

At my previous company’s US cafeteria, I watched the janitors/other support staff sit, use, respect, and serve as a CEO would have. Feudal/caste backgrounds of our society.
