An 88-year-old grandfather died when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding with his grandson broke through the ice on a Maine lake, plunging them into the icy water.
Floyd Hardison had been ice fishing with his son and two grandchildren on Spring River Lake in Hancock County on Friday when the family decided to pack up and return to shore around 6 p.m., authorities said.
The grandfather and an adult grandson were on one ATV and the other grandson and his father were on another when Hardison’s ATV crashed into the ice about a quarter-mile offshore, according to Mark Latti, a Department of Fisheries spokesman. Maine Inland and Inland Fisheries. Wildlife.
The grandson driving the doomed SUV was able to get back onto the ice and escape, but Hardison could not, authorities said.
The elderly man’s body was found in 10-foot-deep water about two hours later by a wetsuit-wearing firefighter.

The death of the Waltham man is the latest incident linked to dangerous ice conditions in recent months in the North East.
In late January, a Maine town manager drowned while rescuing his 4-year-old son after they both fell through the ice on Etna Pond.

While the 80-year-old homeowner was able to get the younger girl to safety, the resident was unable to rescue the 8-year-old girl and called 911. Everyone survived.
