Majority of Iowa Caucus Voters Say Trump is First Choice, Poll Finds

Most likely Iowa caucus voters said former President Trump was their top choice in the pivotal race that kicked off the primary season.

A total of 51% of voters said Trump would be their first choice, according to the survey conducted by Iowa State University and the polling firm Civiqs.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second with 14% support, while former UN ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was the top choice of 10% of likely voters.

There was a closer fight over voters’ second choices.

In that category, DeSantis led with 21% support, followed by businessman Vivek Ramaswamy with 18%.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott got 16%, while Trump came in fourth with 13%.

Voters were also asked about candidates they opposed.

Of that group, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was the most unpopular: Nearly a third of Iowa voters said they were against his candidacy.

Christie has been the highest-profile major Republican candidate to regularly attack Trump in the Republican field.

Former Vice President Pence and Trump himself also generated very negative feelings among voters in the Hawkeye State.

The Iowa caucus is scheduled for January 15, 2024.

“The race right now is clearly President Trump, a small second group of four candidates (DeSantis, Haley, Ramaswamy and Scott) and then a lot of candidates without much support,” said Dave Peterson, a professor at Iowa State University, “ Trump’s career leadership is strong, but it could also be a bit of a limit because most Iowans have strong opinions about him.”
