Man killed by SEPTA train
Following a confrontation at a SEPTA subway station in which another man fell onto the tracks and was tragically struck by an oncoming train, a Philadelphia man believed to be homeless was taken into custody. According to ABC affiliate WPVI, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office said Friday that Chaz Wearing, 40, who has no known home, is being held on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. The incident, which occurred on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and was captured on cameras, claimed the life of a 38-year-old man who has not yet been recognized. The two males can be seen fighting on the platform of the Market-Frankford Line at 34th and Market Street in the moving clip.
As police said, the victim clung to Wearing, “scolding him and making threatening gestures,” NBC Philadelphia reports that one man can be heard demanding things from the other. Wearing lets go of the man and proceeds to punch him twice, sending him crashing into the rails. He is hit by a SEPTA train that arrives at the station a few seconds later. The Pennsylvania District Attorney’s office stated that Wearing has a criminal past that spans multiple counties. He already had a warrant out for his arrest for a strangulation case in Delaware County before this most recent incident.
“In this case, we have a history with the perpetrator. He has a long criminal past and other contacts, from what we know about him. In this case, we had no prior communication with the victim. But he also had a long criminal past, according to SEPTA Police Chief Chuck Lawson. “At that time there were traffic police officers at the station. They had barely gotten off the platform. That’s how quickly it all happened,” Lawson continued. Following Thursday’s incident, the 34th Street Station and the surrounding area adjacent to the Drexel campus were blocked for many hours.
