Massive waves flood California coastal cities as evacuations are ordered

Up and down the California coast, monster waves hit coastal towns on Thursday shaken by a powerful storm in the Pacific Ocean.

From San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond San Francisco, the National Weather Service issued coastal flood warnings and high surf warnings for breaking waves between 28 and 33 feet.

Waves of up to 40 feet were forecast to be seen in some locations.

The huge waves invaded beaches and coastal roads.

Some even crashed into homes and businesses.

The debris deposited on the streets was so heavy that work crews used plows to clear the scenic State Highway 1, south of San Francisco.

Other sections of the road were too buried to clean.

Officials issued evacuation orders for several coastal communities in northern and central California.

“Before anyone said anything, just after a bigger wave came, everyone was asked to leave and evacuate the Esplanade,” Yesica Guzmán posted on social media. “The police were making sure everyone was safe. No one was hurt due to the waves, at least no one near us. Shortly after this video, everyone received evacuation notices and the police evacuated anyone nearby.”

“We put evacuation warnings in place around 8 a.m. this morning for this area and as you can see, these waves are incredibly powerful,” Ashley Keehn, information officer for the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, told KTVU FOX 2. “They’re washing logs here. A lot of debris, a lot of driftwood. That’s why we’ve been asking people to avoid the direct coastal zone.”

However, not everyone followed the advice and ended up soaked.
