‘McCongressman’ Kevin Hern hands out cheeseburgers to his colleagues in his bid to be speaker of the House of Representatives

WASHINGTON — He loves it.

Republican Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma took a unique approach to get some votes for his bid for House speaker on Monday.

Asking for support from his fellow Republican lawmakers, Hern delivered to their offices a “Dear Colleague” letter stapled to a bag containing two McDonald’s cheeseburgers.

The move was an apparent nod to his nickname “McCongressman” for his past as a McDonald’s franchisee. Hern once owned 18 of the fast food restaurants.

“My 35 years of experience as a business leader uniquely qualify me to lead a diverse Republican Conference and ensure we break the pattern of legislating in a perpetual state of crisis,” Hern wrote in his letter.

“Our Conference is at a crossroads. “We can choose to carry on as usual, or we can choose a speaker who did not come to Washington to be something, but to do something,” he added.

House Republicans will meet Monday night to decide who will be their next candidate for House speaker.
