McGhee Tyson Airport Garage
The McGhee Tyson Airport board reportedly approved $2.2 million in work that is authorized for the parking lot expansion. Currently, however, plans to increase parking at McGhee Tyson Airport are beginning to come together. On Sept. 21, during the Knoxville Metropolitan Airport board meeting, commissioners adopted a pledge to award a $2.2 million job to a Knoxville-based civil engineering firm as part of the parking lot project. The award will reportedly be funded by a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. However, the expansion of the parking lot is the first point of a new business. Additionally, commissioners were asked to consider approving a work authorization with Gresham Smith, which is an engineering firm managing an initial portion of the project and completing 30% of the project design documents.
Currently, Vice President of Engineering and Planning, Bryan White, stated that the airport authority is ready to award 30% of the design for the garage expansion. The stage typically involves establishing salient features as well as a timeline for completion. However, the organization would allow Gresham Smith to work on the project, as well as the functional design, among other elements of the expansion. It was learned that the board candidly approved the resolution and accepted funding from TDOT and the parking lot is one of several active construction projects that the MKAA is currently overseeing.
