ME Office Investigator Accused of Stealing Hundreds of Dead People in Florida, New York

An employee of the medical examiner’s office lined his pockets with hundreds of dollars he stole from people whose deaths he had to investigate in Florida and New York City.

Darrell Fernando Reid Jr., 38, was arrested last month for allegedly stealing multiple bank cards while working at two medical examiners’ offices over the past few years, according to court records obtained by the Miami Herald.

He allegedly used the information to transfer funds directly to his own account using Cash App.

Reid’s alleged scheme fell apart in October, when he had only been working as an investigator at the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office for nine months.

The sticky-fingered employee is accused of writing down a dead man’s Bank of America card information while going with nine other employees to a condominium in Coral Springs, where the card’s owner had been in a state of decomposition for two weeks.

The man’s daughter quickly discovered three “suspicious” transactions that were made after her father’s death, all of them $150 Cash App payments made by Reid to a woman he was dating, prosecutors allege.

The first payment was made just 90 minutes after investigators closed the front door of the condominium and handed the key to the deceased’s daughter.

The bank card was also found by the daughter sitting on the kitchen counter, even though investigators documented it as one of several contents found inside a wallet during the death examination.

While he was not at the scene of the third victim’s death investigation, Reid is accused of obtaining the victim’s debit card information while reviewing Broward County case files.

From 2020 to November of last year, Reid filled his Cash App with 27 payment sources, including 25 debit and credit cards and two Cash App cards, although it is unclear how many were allegedly stolen.

“An investigation into the account holders of the additional cards is currently underway and subpoenas have been served on multiple banking institutions,” Reid’s order states.

Reid was charged with three counts of fraudulent use of the personal identifying information of a deceased person and fraudulent use of a credit card.

He resigned from the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office on Friday after serving as an investigator since April 2023.

The Post contacted the New York Office of the Chief Medical Examiner regarding Reid’s employment.
