Memphis Family Devastated After Porch Pirates Stole Grandma’s Ashes

A Tennessee woman is devastated to lose her grandmother for the second time after a porch pirate stole her ashes.

“She was definitely my rock when it came to grandparents. She was there for every graduation, every birthday,” Amy Rost told WREG.

“It’s definitely been difficult. It’s one of those things where we try to weigh the advantages of the situation,” Rost said.

Rost’s grandmother died in October. She was cremated and her ashes were divided between Rost’s father, Jeff, and his aunt, who lives in Ohio, and sent to Jeff’s home in the Midtown neighborhood of Memphis.

Tracking information showed that the package containing the ashes was delivered on December 4, but when Jeff went out to get it off his porch, there was nothing there.

He believes the irreplaceable package was stolen by a thief.

“Many things have been stolen from us here. Everything from tables and chairs to a can of Raid. “Someone always comes and takes everything they can find,” he told the outlet.

Memphis is ranked as the second-worst city in the country for porch pirates, according to a Safewise report last month.

Nationally, package thefts have caused losses of up to $6 billion nationwide, if the average stolen package was $50, according to Safewise. More than half of the stolen packages were from Amazon.

The family is now begging whoever took the box to return it, no questions asked.

“If I saw someone bring a box and leave it on the porch, I’ll leave it until they’re gone,” Jeff told WREG. “I’m not trying to prosecute anyone, it’s just that it would be nice to have it back.”

The Rosts said they plan to install a security camera to deter future thieves.
