Meta Threads breaks records with 10 million subscriptions in 7 hours

Meta launched its Twitter counterpart, “Threads,” and the app broke all previous records.

Compared to OpenAIs ChatGPT, which had over 1 million users in its first 7 days, the new offering attracted a whopping 10 million signups in just the first 7 hours.

For Zuck and his team, who have competed with OpenAI and others, this should be a little “pat on the back” moment.

To join Threads, all you have to do is download the new app and sign in with your existing Instagram account. While ChatGPT’s huge popularity may stem from the fact that it was a unique large language model that people could access for free, Threads’ success can be attributed to Instagram’s current user base.

And now that the excitement surrounding the Musk-Zuckerberg cage fight has died down, the competition has expanded into a new area. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed the issue on Twitter hours after Threads’ debut. This was the first time in over ten years that he had done it. Zuckerberg shared the famous Spider-Man versus Spider-Man meme in response to the Threads news, poking fun at the circumstance.

Musk didn’t wait either; responding to a tweet, he then took a quick jab at Zuck, implying that the show was nothing more than copy and paste. Of course, this was all in jest because the match would never take place.

Elon Musk took some radical steps, first to monetize the platform and second to prevent all site data from being wiped to develop LLM by limiting the number of posts viewable on free accounts on Twitter to 600. Zuck, however, seems to have become rich. Musk’s controversial point of view also reportedly triggered record traffic on Twitter rival Bluesky, run by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. He also benefited from Mastodon, which is built on top of the ActivityPub protocol.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, stated that Meta’s Threads will not support ActivityPub at launch, but might in the future. This would allow users to follow and communicate with others on other federative platforms, such as Mastodon.

Soon, you will be able to follow and communicate with users on Mastodon and other federated sites. Additionally, they can search for users in Threads using their full usernames, such as @[email protected], Mosseri added, saying the team was unable to finish the project in time to support the fediverse release.

However, there is a caveat: you can only cancel your thread profile after you have registered. Also, you need to deactivate your Instagram account to completely destroy your profile and all related data.
