The star of a Michigan high school football team during its senior night game was not one of the athletes, but a mother of three who recently woke up from a five-year coma.
Jennifer Flewellen captivated an entire community for the second time on October 20 when she appeared on the sidelines to cheer up her 18-year-old son, just 15 months after waking up from his years-long slumber.
“No one expected her to wake up,” Peggy Means, Flewellen’s mother, told WNDU.
“We were told all the time that he has anoxia and that because of the brain damage he will never wake up, but you never say never.”
The 41-year-old mother of three suffered catastrophic injuries in a car accident in September 2017 in which she swerved across a highway and collided with a utility pole.
She was found unconscious at the scene and remained in a coma for 4 years and 11 months, making her recovery extraordinary and leading doctors to call her a “living miracle.”
Flewellen’s return to the field was highly anticipated: The community remembered her as a dedicated mother who was always the loudest cheerleader on the sidelines.

“She really pushed them and was yelling a lot,” Means said. “Everyone who knew Jenn, she was very loud. They (her children) used to say, ‘she couldn’t even hear my coach, mom.’ You made more noise than the coach.’”
According to Means, his daughter got her three sons into soccer as early as possible to keep them from getting into trouble.
She was forced to miss her two older children’s senior night games during her five years in a coma, but she was eager to see her youngest son steal the show for his Niles High School team.

Julian made sure to mark the special occasion by scoring the opening touchdown of the game on his team’s turf against undefeated Paw Paw.
He then scored three more touchdowns, leading his team to a 56-18 victory.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle that he’s here tonight for his youngest son’s senior night,” his longtime friend Cassie Lee told the outlet.

Another friend said the community is “still in shock” because Flewellen was there to watch the game.
“Just having the opportunity to have her here to support him and let everyone know that she is thriving and continuing to get better,” Sara Macon said.
According to WNDU, Flewellen has been living at home since July, about 11 months after he miraculously woke up from a coma.
