At its annual Ignite developer conference on November 16, 2023, Microsoft announced that it would be renaming its AI-powered chatbot, Bing Chat, to Copilot on Bing. The premium corporate version, previously called Bing Chat Enterprise, has also been rebranded as Copilot.
According to Microsoft, the goal behind this name change is to create a unified brand and user experience for both regular consumers and enterprise customers who use its AI assistant technology. However, critics speculate that the change is an attempt by Microsoft to distance the chatbot from the search engine Bing, which failed to gain market share from Google in the six months after Bing Chat launched.
Expanded availability
In addition to the rebranding, Microsoft revealed that it is greatly expanding access to the newly named Copilot assistant. Starting December 1, corporate users who sign in to Bing using their Microsoft Entra ID will receive “business data protection” benefits when interacting with Copilot on Bing. This means that Microsoft will not save or use your data to train AI models, and Microsoft will not have access to it.
Additionally, Copilot will now ship with a wide range of Microsoft business subscription plans, including Microsoft 365 E, E5, Business Premium, and Business Standard, at no additional cost. It will also be included in Microsoft 365 F3 starting December 1. For customers who do not have these plans, Copilot will be available for individual purchase for $5 per month.
According to Microsoft, Copilot will update its terms and conditions on December 1 to reflect its official general availability as a Microsoft product. As part of this, you will inherit the universal license terms for other Microsoft online services. Microsoft says it will continue to expand eligibility for Copilot with Business Data Protection to more and more Entra ID users in the future at no additional cost.
In addition to being accessible through Copilot.Microsoft.com and Bing, Copilot can now also be used directly on Windows, thanks to its expanded integration.
