Microsoft will remove Wordpad from Windows in a future version

Microsoft no longer updates WordPad and intends to remove it from a future version of Windows. Instead, we would recommend Microsoft Word, a paid word processor that has always had many more features than the basic WordPad tool that has been included as part of Windows since Windows 95.

“WordPad is no longer updated and will be removed in a future version of Windows,” Microsoft said in a support statement issued Friday. “We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents such as .doc and .rtf, and Windows Notepad for plain text files such as .txt.”

WordPad’s retirement comes just a day after Microsoft announced that Notepad will be updated with features like auto-save and auto-tab restore. For the first time in years, Microsoft updated its Windows Notepad software in 2018, adding tabs to the Windows 11 edition.

WordPad, on the other hand, has received less attention. The word processor was updated with Windows 7’s Ribbon UI, but after a small Windows 8 revamp, there haven’t been any major changes. Microsoft will now remove WordPad entirely in a “future version of Windows,” which will likely be the Windows 12 edition we anticipate for 2024, which will have a host of AI-powered features.
