Morgan State University to build wall around Baltimore campus after four students shot

A wall will be built around Morgan State University after five people, including four students, were shot on the Baltimore campus last week, according to school leaders.

University President David Wilson announced Tuesday that the university would invest $22 million in security improvements, including building an 8,000-foot-long barrier to “eliminate unrestricted access” to the school, the Associated Press reported. .

“We are doing this, let me be clear, not to keep our neighbors and our community at large; we’re doing it to keep bad actors out,” Wilson said during a public meeting.

Along with the wall, which will surround 90% of the campus, Morgan State officials touted plans to install more metal detectors, more police patrols and more security guard booths on campus to ensure student safety.

Officials said many of the improvements were already planned for the future, but would be accelerated to address the latest concerns about student safety on campus.

Many at the historically black university expressed their fears at the town hall meeting after the school’s Mister and Miss Morgan State coronation ceremony was interrupted due to gunshots on Oct. 3.

The shooting, which took place during homecoming week, left four students injured and the shooters are still at large.

Baltimore police have since released surveillance images of four suspects walking around campus, who appear to flee after gunshots were heard.

The shooting is believed to have started as “a dispute between two smaller groups, and one individual was targeted by two individuals who had weapons,” Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said last week.

The victims were four men and one woman between the ages of 18 and 22, who were later transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All five victims have since been released from the hospital.

Last week’s shooting was not the first time violence broke out during Morgan State’s homecoming celebrations.

Last year, a man was shot on campus during an unauthorized campus after-party, according to officials. The year before, a freshman was arrested and accused of shooting a classmate over holiday weekend.
