Moviegoer upset when couple rests barefoot on seats in front of them: ‘Nasy s–t’

Tourists are often surprised by how much we go barefoot in this part of the world: on the street, in the supermarket and in cafes.

But what about cinema?

A Scottish tourist took a photo of a barefoot moviegoer and took to a New Zealand subreddit to ask what was going on.

They said the couple was putting their feet on the chairs in front of them, which were empty.

“It was strange to see people walking barefoot through the city, but I respect it, it’s comfortable, it lets the dogs out, you know,” the Scot wrote. “I am sure it is good for the health and shape of the foot in older people.

“But this seemed crazy to me, the next poor thing who sits in the front seat will have the remains of these two pong floating over their heads for 120 minutes.

“If this were Glasgow, someone would have thrown a coke bottle or a stolen iPhone into the back of his head before his foot had even left the shoe. Is this just a cultural difference?

The locals were quick to inform the traveler that walking barefoot was quite common in summer, but that putting such feet on the headrests of public chairs was not widely accepted.

“Putting your feet on headrests, with or without shoes, is bad behavior,” one wrote.

“Feet on the headrest is disgusting shit. Barefoot outside? It is very common here during the summer,” added another.

“If I go to the movies with sandals, I usually take them off. However, I won’t put them on the headrest in front of me,” explained one New Zealander.

“Welcome. No, it’s not normal. It’s bad behavior,” confirmed a fourth.

Some described the act as “disgusting,” “disgusting” and “rude.”

As for walking barefoot, the Kiwis encouraged the Scot to try it.

“My American family came to New Zealand and thought the barefoot thing was strange too. It’s very normal here in New Zealand! one said.

“I went the other way (from South Africa to Florida before coming to New Zealand) and the first time I went barefoot in public, people ran up to me in shock and told me how dangerous it was,” another person wrote.

“My mate was in Scotland as a kid in the summer, running barefoot. An elderly lady stopped his car and gave him £10 ($12) to buy some shoes, even though he was poor. “His father was an airline pilot,” a third person shared.
