Mysterious ramshackle ‘house’ seen teetering on treacherous California cliff

A precarious “house” built from driftwood and other debris was recently seen in drone footage teetering mysteriously at the foot of a notoriously steep California cliff, just above the cool spray of the Pacific Ocean.

The house, which looks like something out of The Swiss Robinson Family, is an impressive, if hastily constructed, multi-story structure that appears to have multiple rooms and hallways, with some parts even roofed with tarp or other materials, according to incredible footage posted on YouTube by aerial photographer @ParallaxEffect.

“We were walking along the California coast in a place we were familiar with and I noticed something strange on the cliffs,” the drone operator wrote in the caption, calling it “one of the most incredible human structures I have ever seen.” “.

A single chair billowing in the wind suggests that perhaps there was someone living in the house, or at least whoever built it visited occasionally to relax by the ocean.

However, it is unclear whether the house, which was also captured on camera in November 2022, was able to survive the strong winds and waves of the Northern California winter.

YouTube users flooded the comments at the shocking sight reported by SFGate on Thursday; Some said the structure, located on the edge of the treacherous Devils Slide cliffs near Pacifica, had suffered significant damage since the images were taken.

“This shack has been there for many years, but was almost completely destroyed during the winter and rains last year,” user Dan Sullivan commented below. “This video was taken before last winter or the hut was rebuilt in recent months.”

Video publisher @ParallaxEffect responded that he thought it would be destroyed. Nor do they suspect that anyone lived there when they filmed it.

“Firstly, there were no signs that anyone was present in any of the images. Secondly, the wind and waves of winter would destroy this. It may already be gone, the pictures I took are almost a year old,” he wrote in the comments.

“Third, the resources required to get all that material to that location, even if they are driftwood and ocean debris, are not superficial, nor would the skill and effort required to build the structure,” he wrote. “I came to the conclusion, and continue to do so unless proven otherwise, that this was done as a project by someone or a group during the pandemic.”

The publication has reached out to @ParallaxEffect for more information.

Google Maps images from 2022 show the structure apparently still intact.

Tamas Holczer commented that the structure in the video is actually the second version of a house built by an artist named Boris.

Holczer said he met Boris a few years ago and that the artist created the house as a “getaway place” to paint whales.

Sullivan shared a similar encounter, writing that “a trail guide told me that a ‘crazy Russian hermit’ built it and lives there from time to time.”

He wrote that he saw the man walk over the railing with a bunch of supplies and watched him make the 30-minute trip to the shack, “and that’s probably a lot easier than going up.”

Not far from the mystery house, a suicidal doctor, Dharmesh Patel, fell off a 250-foot cliff with his wife and two children in the car in January.

All four miraculously survived.
