Navalny’s advisers fear for his health after fainting in prison

Advisers to jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny said on Friday they were seriously concerned about his health and had not been able to contact him for three days.

Navalny, 47, is imprisoned in a penal colony east of Moscow and has been sentenced to a total of more than 30 years on what he says are trumped-up charges to silence his criticism of President Vladimir Putin.

His aides said Navalny’s lawyers were outside the colony all day but were denied entry to see him and that he did not show up for scheduled court hearings on his case.

“We have learned that last week he had a serious health incident. Navalny’s life is at great risk. She is in complete isolation right now,” Maria Pevchikh, president of the Navalny Anti-Corruption Foundation, posted on the X social media platform.

Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said prison staff had given him a drip last week after he became dizzy and lay on the floor of his cell in what she said looked like a “fainting spell.” hunger”.

“It is already the third day that we do not know where he is. Before that, there were at least occasional letters from him, albeit censored, but there have been no letters all week,” he wrote in X.

Navalny has long-term health problems, having survived a nerve agent poisoning in Siberia in 2020. The Kremlin has denied trying to kill him and refuses to comment on his case, saying he is being treated like any other prisoner.
