New water park explodes in huge fireball in Sweden

A raging inferno broke out at a new water park in Sweden on Monday, with flames decimating a series of under-construction outdoor water slides and related facilities, authorities said.

The massive fire swept through several yet-to-open water slides, including one with a 43-foot drop, at the Oceana water park in Goteberg, sending plumes of black smoke over Sweden’s second-largest city.

Heartbreaking images filmed by witnesses showed the slides, which were scheduled to open in the coming months, engulfed in flames as several firefighting vehicles descended on the area.

At least three explosions caused debris from nearby buildings to scatter over the burning water slides.

The water park is a new addition to Gothenburg’s Liseberg amusement park, one of the largest amusement parks in the Nordic region.

“The fire started on one of the water attractions outside the building and then spread to the entire building,” Liseberg said in a statement.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, police and firefighters said.

A subcontractor was carrying out some installations when the fire started, a spokeswoman for NCC Group, which is the general contractor for the construction, told Swedish broadcaster SVT.

The fire department had urged surrounding residents to stay indoors and keep their windows closed to protect themselves from the fumes and thick black smoke.

The hotel and nearby offices were evacuated, the park and police said.
