NH Gov. Chris Sununu to endorse Nikki Haley in blow to 2024 rivals

New Hampshire Republican Gov. Chris Sununu is expected to endorse former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for the party’s presidential nomination later Tuesday, giving her a vital boost in the first state to hold primaries in the country.

Sununu will formally give his blessing to Haley at a City Hall event in Manchester, the Granite State’s largest city, after spending months assessing the Republican field for an alternative to former President Donald Trump, according to local ABC affiliate WMUR. .

“I’m looking forward to meeting Nikki at her town hall tonight. It’s going to be so much fun!” Sununu, 49, said in a statement to The Post.

Haley, 51, is currently polling second in New Hampshire with an average of 18.7% support, according to RealClearPolitics, exactly 27 percentage points behind Trump, 77, whom Sununu has ruled out endorsing.

“He can’t win in November ’24,” Sununu told CNN during a June interview in which he announced that he himself would not seek the presidency.

“Mathematics has shown that Donald Trump has no chance of winning in November 24. He wouldn’t even win in Georgia. “If you’re a Republican who can’t win Georgia on November 24, you don’t have a chance, and he’s proven that.”

Sununu’s endorsement of Haley represents a blow to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has essentially bet the viability of his campaign in New Hampshire, where the RCP average places him in third place.
