Nicole Maines is an American actress and transgender rights activist. She is best known for appearing in the television series Nia Nal (or Dreamer) in the television series Supergirl from 2018 to 2021. She has also worked on several television series including Darby and the Dead, Good Trouble, Bit, The Trans List and Royal Pains.
Birth and early life
Nicole Maines was born on October 7, 1997 in Gloversville, New York. Kelly and Wayne Maines adopt her in 1997. She has a twin brother named Jonas. Maines was assigned a male sex at birth and she began showing signs of gender variation at a young age. Her brother, Jonas, accepted her gender identity from a very young age. Maines completed his high school graduation at Waynflete School and then graduated from the University of Maine.
In July 2015, a month after graduating from high school, she underwent gender affirmation surgery in Philadelphia. She chose Nicole (Nikki for short) as her name in honor of the character Nicole Bristow, one of Zoey’s companions on the Nickelodeon show Zoey 101.

Maines began her acting career as Anna, a transgender teenager, on the USA Network television series Royal Pains. She later worked on two documentaries The Trans List and Not Your Skin. She rose to fame for her portrayal of Nia Nal on The CW television series Supergirl. She played television’s first transgender superhero. She later played Liza Davis in Good Trouble and Piper in Darby and the Dead.
