Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley on Thursday downplayed her recent comment that New Hampshire voters would “correct” the Iowa caucus results, telling town hall attendees in the Hawkeye State that she simply I was “cutting.”
“Oh my God,” Haley sighed awkwardly after receiving groans of disapproval from many in the crowd at Grand View University in Des Moines when CNN anchor Erin Burnett brought up the mistake.
The former South Carolina governor, however, defended her comments, arguing that people were taking it too seriously.
“We have held more than 150 town halls. You gotta have some fun too,” Haley said.
The White House hopeful, who is polling second in New Hampshire, compared to her third place in Iowa, told Granite State voters at a town hall event Wednesday that “you have the opportunity to make this good”, voting for his.
“You know Iowa starts. You know you correct it… you know my sweet state of South Carolina brings it home to you,” Haley, 51, added during the forum in Milford, NH.
“So, we are in this town hall. We had 700 people in New Hampshire. We’re cutting and yes, I said that,” Haley told the Iowa crowd, explaining her comments.

He claimed that people from the first three nominated states (Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina) often “joke with each other about different things.”
“New Hampshire makes fun of Iowa. Iowa makes fun of South Carolina. It’s what we do,” Haley said.
“I think the problem in current politics is that it is too serious and too dramatic,” he argued. “Yes we are having fun. I don’t live, eat and breathe politics all the time. “I like to have fun too.”

Haley continued to emphasize her fondness for Iowa and that her comments were not indicative of a lack of confidence in how she would perform in the upcoming caucuses.
“I’ve been coming here for months, going everywhere in Iowa, shaking every hand, answering every question, being the last person to leave each of these town halls. “You will see me fight to the end on the last day in Iowa,” he said.
“I’ll probably say something funny tomorrow in Iowa about South Carolina and New Hampshire. It’s the way to not make everything so serious,” Haley added, drawing applause from those attending the town hall.
