Northeast expects a spell of wet weather heading into New Year’s Eve

NEW YORK – The Northeast is on general alert as many return to work and prepare for New Year’s celebrations.

The Interstate 95 corridor from Washington to Connecticut will be the focus of the heaviest rain in the region this week and could cause flash flooding.

“There will be a corridor from Connecticut to Jersey, perhaps even closer to Delmarva, where this rain is reinforced by a coastal low,” said FOX Weather meteorologist Stephen Morgan. “As for widespread rain, we will still see it across much of Pennsylvania to New York. “This area, however, has been highlighted for the potential to face some flooding or excessive rainfall.”

Moisture and storm energy from the storm that closed roads across the Plains with blizzard conditions is moving east as a new disturbance forms along the cold front off the mid-Atlantic coast. This could bring up to 2 inches of rain from Wednesday to Thursday on the already saturated northeast coast.

The NWS New York office is already warning northeast New Jersey of river flooding and urban flooding and poor drainage from Philadelphia to New York City.

The heaviest rain will end Thursday night, but the slow-moving system will keep the chance of showers in the forecast through Friday night and even into Saturday morning.

This could cause problems for travelers heading to Boston, New York and Washington to celebrate the New Year. FOX Weather forecasts travel delays at airports from the DC metro area to Boston.

Roads will also be wet, but not very slippery. This is a warm system and most of the precipitation will fall as rain. There is a chance for some flurries Friday night.

“Maybe you are traveling. Maybe you’re coming home,” Morgan said. “AAA expects Thursday to be one of the busiest days as people will go on trips and return home on Thursday. Wednesday to Thursday will also be the rainiest day this week. So we’ll keep an eye on that along the I-95 corridor.”

New Year’s Eve won’t necessarily be a disaster, however, as a weak ridge forms over the northeast and creates dry conditions.

“Don’t be fooled by this – these next three days – because in New York City things are going to get better,” Morgan said. “We’re dealing with cloudy and somewhat gloomy conditions followed by rain, but overall we’ll see things dry out for the New Year.”

However, inland areas from West Virginia to Pittsburgh and Buffalo, New York, won’t be so lucky. While the coast is clear, a mix of rain and snow is forecast from western New York to the Appalachians.
