Nursing student saves a man who stopped breathing while driving a car: “Actions that save lives”

A nursing student sprang into action and allegedly saved a man’s life after he stopped breathing while driving a car.

Demi Murphy is a three-year nursing student at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Liverpool, England.

He was returning to work after lunch when he noticed a man’s car was in the middle of the road.

He ran to the car and noticed the man, identified as John McKeown, was not breathing and unresponsive, he told the BBC.

“I didn’t have time to think about it. I just got in the car and started doing CPR on him while he was in the driver’s seat,” she recalled.

Her friend, who had been on the phone with her, called an ambulance, she said.

At the same time, McKeown’s partner, Vicky Flattery, called the driver’s phone and Murphy answered.

That’s when he learned that McKeown’s father had a genetic heart disease, as the BBC reported.

“Fortunately, the ambulance arrived pretty quickly, they got him out of the car and I continued CPR while John was on the ground, while the paramedics got the defibrillator,” he said.

After taking his pulse, McKeown was loaded into the ambulance and taken to the hospital.

The 37-year-old man later discovered he had gone into cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation. According to the BBC, he was placed in intensive care on life support.

McKeown suffered a seizure and was also placed in an induced coma.

Since the Nov. 11 incident, McKeown has undergone surgery to have an implantable cardiac defibrillator fitted to stop his irregular heartbeat. He was able to spend Christmas with Flattery and her three children.

Flattery told the BBC that although McKeown doesn’t have many memories of the incident or a few days before the incident, they are grateful he is okay.

“We are really grateful that Demi was in the right place at the right time and that all the other paramedics and hospital teams worked to save John, so he could return home to his children and family,” they said.

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust chief nursing officer David Melia told the BBC that Murphy should be “incredibly proud of herself”.

“His quick thinking and life-saving actions mean John is here to enjoy Christmas with his family this year,” he said.

Meliá added that he has “no doubt that Demi has a long and successful career ahead of her.”
