Jesse, 15, was shooting an octopus “at a safe distance” with his GoPro when the animal decided it wanted the camera for itself in a video that was uploaded to Facebook but has since been deleted.

“It slowly extended a tentacle and grabbed the selfie stick, pulling the camera away,” Karen Johnson, Jesse’s mother, told Yahoo News Australia.

“A tug of war ensued and the octopus won.”

Jesse stayed close and “from time to time tugged” on the camera, perplexed by the unexpected turn of events. He eventually had to seek help.

Jesse approached two divers in the water for help, one of whom admitted to having “all kinds of quandaries” in his head thinking about what the young diver might need help with.

Hearing Jesse exclaim, “An octopus took my camera,” was not a scenario the diver would have contemplated.

“He took us to where he last saw his camera and sure enough, there was the eight-gun thief with every one of them. [tentacles] nicely wrapped around the GoPro,” the diver said on Facebook.

The man managed to recover the GoPro

He “had no choice” but to pick up the GoPro with the “heavy” animal attached, moving the camera gently before finally freeing the GoPro after trying to disengage it from the octopus.

“I moved the camera to the side several times and he reluctantly let go,” the diver explained.

Karen subsequently posted the GoPro clip of the octopus grabbing her son’s camera online.
