Ohio couple with same birthday give birth to twins on their birthday

There are no excuses for wishing a belated birthday with this family.

An Ohio couple with the same birthday received a unique blue moon gift on their special day this year: a set of newborn twins.

Scierra Blair, 31, and José Ervin, 32, who celebrate their birthdays on August 18, welcomed a son and daughter just five minutes after midnight a little over a week ago at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital, on August 18.

“It’s a blessing,” Ervin told PEOPLE. “The best birthday present of all time.”

The chances of a baby sharing a birthday with both parents are extremely rare: about 1 in 133,000 births, the Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children estimated when a similar birth occurred last year.

Added to the rate of twin births (about 31 in 1,000 successful births), the couple had a better chance of being struck by lightning than giving birth to newborns on their own birthdays.

The extraordinary event almost did not happen. Ervin had to convince her fiancée to put up with a few more hours of discomfort to get to the due date.

The babies were initially expected to be born on August 28. But when the couple went for a checkup on August 17, doctors discovered that one of the babies was positioned feet-down in the womb and recommended a cesarean delivery that day to prevent it. complications.

That was around 4:30 p.m., and Ervin said he realized that if they held out for a few more hours, the whole family would share the same birthday.

Since Blair and the babies were healthy and the doctors said it would be okay to wait if they preferred, Ervin tried to convince his tired and hungry fiancé to hang on.

“Since she was in good health and not stressed, and the kids were in good health and not stressed, I thought, ‘Why not wait?’” she said.

“I said that the fact that our children are born on our birthday is something unique. All of us celebrating together, that’s beautiful.”

“I was hungry and I just wanted it to be over,” Blair recounted.

“He said, ‘It’s only a few hours and it’s going to go by very quickly.’ And I just looked at him and said, ‘That’s easy for you to say.’ I’m hungry.'”

Ervin eventually won Blair over, but not without some concessions.

“I agreed, but I told them they owed me a week’s worth of potato salad,” Blair said.
