One of the Giza pyramids in Egypt will receive a major facelift under a controversial plan: “Project of the century”

This may be the best solution for the top.

Egyptian archaeologists are working to restore one of the Giza pyramids to what they believe it looked like when it was erected about 4,000 years ago, a plan they called the “project of the century.”

Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, announced last week the initiative to resurface the exterior of the Pyramid of Menkaure, the smallest of Giza’s three main pyramids, with hundreds of granite blocks that once covered the old structure.

“There have been numerous projects throughout history that have been called ‘Project of the Century’, but, in my opinion, the task of restoring the granite cover of the Menkaure Pyramid is equally significant and crucial,” Waziri said while standing at the base. of the pyramid.

According to Waziri, the project is “Egypt’s gift to the world.”

The Pyramid of Menkaure, erected as the tomb of King Menkaure around 2000 BC. C., it is the only known pyramid in Egypt that was built with an outer layer of granite blocks, according to Waziri.

It was once covered by smooth blocks until what scientists believe was an earthquake caused dozens to collapse from the structure over the past thousand years.

Archaeologists plan to use the same original granite blocks, which have been scattered around the base of the pyramid since it fell and can be seen in photographs dating back to the 20th century.

The team, led by a coalition of Egyptian and Japanese experts, will spend at least a year studying and planning the initiative before an international team decides whether to move forward with reconstruction.

There has been some pushback against the plans, with some critics complaining that the smooth blocks will look strange next to the worn surface of the existing pyramid.

Even other historians criticized the project, with some criticizing the plan on Waziri’s Facebook page.

“Impossible,” wrote Egyptologist Monica Hanna. “The only thing missing was to add mosaics to the Menkaure pyramid! “When are we going to put an end to the absurdity in the management of Egyptian heritage?”

“All international principles on renovations prohibit such interventions.”
