OnePlus Nord 2 Review, Features and Specifications in 2021

OnePlus Nord 2 is the latest affordable phone from OnePlus. It’s not particularly strong in any area, but it’s a solid mix that might be just what you’re looking for.

What exactly do you need from a smartphone?

When looking for a cheap smartphone, this is most likely the question you should be asking yourself. If you want the best phone, you need to have everything. However, if you don’t want to spend an excessive amount of money, you’ll need to do a little introspection. Do you want a high-quality camera? How about a long-lasting battery? Is there a big impressive screen? Are you looking for a quick change?

MediaTek processor

A cheaper alternative to Qualcomm’s better Snapdragon chips, the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 5G CPU is the biggest sacrifice on the OnePlus Nord 2’s spec list. What’s more, it doesn’t really make a difference. The Nord 2 is fast and responsive thanks to its 12GB of RAM. This OnePlus Nord 2 also brings fast 5G connectivity as the name suggests.

Another feature that contributes to the phone’s responsiveness is the 6.43-inch 90Hz AMOLED display. Although 90Hz is now pretty much standard (unless you’re Apple), OnePlus still gets extra points for adding it in a less device. expensive. It’s not dynamic though – you have to manually change the display to 90Hz or 60Hz, the latter being the default.

Finally, the Nord 2 runs OnePlus OxygenOS 11.3 on top of Android 11, making it one of the best Android software combinations available today. Because OxygenOS is so close to stocking Android, OnePlus phones will give you the closest experience to owning a Pixel phone without owning one. If you’re a developer, OxygenOS comes with a host of additional capabilities, including iOS-style gesture navigation. One thing to note is that the Nord 2 comes with two years of Android updates and an additional year of security patches from OnePlus.

Battery

The Nord 2 has a 4500mAh battery with 65W fast charging, which should last you a day and a half (a day if you’re a heavy user). Some people don’t care about fast charging, but I do. I don’t have to charge the Nord 2 overnight because it charges from 0 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes. I just plug it in every once in a while for a few minutes, and I’m good to go. Oh, and one more thing: the charger is included in the box. That’s it, iPhone 12.

Design

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G is a basic Android smartphone in terms of design. The triple rear camera is housed under a modest (by today’s standards) hump on the back, alongside the OnePlus logo. Both the front and back of the phone use Gorilla Glass 5, which offers considerable scratch resistance. Still, you’ll want to protect both sides. Fortunately, the Nord 2 comes with a pre-applied screen protector and a clear case, so you’ll be ready to go right out of the box.

On the front, there’s a slim bezel at the bottom and a punch hole at the top left that houses the 32-megapixel selfie camera.

Finally, the frame of the phone is made of plastic, but has a metal look to it, and I honestly mistook it for metal until I looked at the specs page. Everything is a bit slippery, so you’ll want to keep it in a case.

The Nord 2’s form factor appeals to me. Many new phones have unusually large screens, making them difficult to hold and operate with one hand. OnePlus Nord 2 is somewhat smaller and thinner than OnePlus 9, but it fits comfortably in my palm.

The OnePlus Nord 2 is available in two colors: Gray Sierra and Blue Haze. My review item was gray, and while it has a beautiful, almost shiny appearance when viewed up close, it’s not particularly attractive from afar. OnePlus was kind enough to provide some unique additional cases with the gift, which made it that much more interesting.

Camera

The camera is not bad, but it is not that good. When you take a couple of quick shots at twilight, you might be looking into a smartphone camera. Most phones capture great images in bright light, but only a few deliver consistently great shots in low light.

In this test, the OnePlus Nord 2 performed poorly. His nocturnal images were dazzling, but they were everywhere. When you zoom in on the ocean waves in the shot above, they resemble a watercolor painting. Also, his low-light images had an artificially yellow cast.

The Nord 2 performed significantly better during the day, due to its 50-megapixel primary sensor, which can record a fair amount of information. He still thought the photos were too bright at times, but it wasn’t a major problem. The ultra-wide camera features an 8-megapixel sensor, and the lack of detail reveals the low number of megapixels. Colors fade much more than in images taken with the main sensor, which are bright.

You can zoom as much as you want, but don’t go beyond 5x, or the photos will be unusable due to loss of detail. Lastly, the Nord 2 packs a 32-megapixel selfie camera which, once the cosmetics are turned off, provides fairly accurate shots.

Facial recognition is included on the Nord 2. However, because it relies solely on the selfie camera (rather than a depth sensor like the iPhone), it won’t work well in low light. It also features an under-display fingerprint scanner, however it doesn’t always work (just like every other under-display fingerprint scanner I’ve tried).

The Nord 2, on the other hand, features impressively loud stereo speakers. It’s also worth mentioning that it comes with a 65W fast charger, which is a nice bonus.

What is available and what is not?

The Nord 2 is a budget smartphone, so expecting it to feature all the bells and whistles is unrealistic. However, the list of items that are not present is relatively short. The Nord 2 lacks a water resistance rating and headphone jack, both of which are standard these days, however some competitors ship it with budget phones. It also lacks wireless charging, which is a fairly common omission for a budget phone.

OnePlus Nord 2 review

For various reasons, OnePlus Nord 2 is the company’s first smartphone. It is the first OnePlus smartphone to pack a MediaTek processor, as well as the first to launch with the combined OxygenOS and ColorOS operating system. He wasn’t a big fan of the original Nord because he thought the value proposition it offered was inferior to other smartphones available in Europe. The OnePlus Nord 2 is a game changer for me and I am very excited about it.

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G arrives in Europe and India as a strong candidate for a premium mid-range device, and the Density 1200 SoC deserves a lot of respect. While the Nord 2 is not a true flagship due to the existence of the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, the SoC is the current flagship from MediaTek. To promote the device, OnePlus relies on unique OnePlus expertise, and as my colleague Aamir Siddiqui pointed out in his first impressions of the Nord 2, OnePlus’ Dimensity gamble has paid off.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Nord 2 is a fantastic mid-range device. It offers a good set of features, runs well, charges quickly, and has good battery life. Produces acceptable, if not excellent photos. The design won’t blow you away, but don’t expect it to outperform significantly more expensive phones in every way. Finally, OnePlus’ OxygenOS software is one of the best Android skins available.

The Nord 2 isn’t available in the United States, which may be its biggest flaw. It costs €399 ($466) in Europe, which is a reasonable price for what you get.
