Tourist recklessly drives SUV near reserved lakes in Ladakh

Shared by a fellow birder from #Ladakh…this stupidity is getting out of hand. This apparently “barren” landscape is full of #life– and the short summer is when that life is at its peak. That too in a Ramsar site! These idiots need to be named, shamed and booked!… pic.twitter.com/wRpYkkYf6p

A video like this doesn’t go viral for the first time. A video showing visitors driving a car towards Pangong Pso Lake in Ladakh caused quite a stir in April 2022. A small table with bottles of alcoholic beverages and food was also set up on the lake shore, according to the video.

People on the Internet were angry. One man suggested that this is what happens when tourism in eco-sensitive areas is overpromoted. This has to happen, feel.

One man had a simple solution and wrote that private vehicles should not be allowed in Ladakh, which is an eco-sensitive area.

The simple solution is to not allow private vehicles in Laddakh. It is an eco-sensitive area.

This is how other people reacted.

It should be mandatory for any tourist to wander alone with a local guide…it is impossible for the authorities to refuel these desolate places 24/7. They can take action after the fact only when the video appears but the damage is already done.

Tourists need to visit places with a certain sense of responsibility towards the environment. The people above seem to be more destructive in nature than conservative. Educated but lack common sense and empathy.

Ladakh’s Tso Kar and Tso Moriri lakes are part of the Ramsar locations

Ramsar sites include Ladakh’s Tso Kar and Tso Moriri lakes. This means that the region around the lake must be preserved with as little human intervention as possible.

The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty established in 1971 with the objective of conserving and promoting the sustainable use of wetlands.

Ramsar sites are recognized for their ecological importance, biodiversity, and the services they provide, such as water purification, flood control, and habitat for numerous plant and animal species. These designated sites are intended to be conserved and managed to ensure their ecological integrity.

There are currently more than 2,400 Ramsar sites around the world, covering a total area of more than 253 million hectares. These sites may include various types of wetlands, such as marshes, lakes, rivers, peatlands, mangroves, and coastal areas.
